PRIMARY PURPOSE

The primary duty of the Offensive Assistant Coach position is to teach, train, and develop the skills of the student athletes in the sport of Football while integrating the Catholic faith through mentorship and virtue development.

The offensive assistant works under the offensive coordinator and will have primary responsibility for a position group.  As such, knowledge of teaching, technique and training for an offensive position is important.  The position requires that the coach is responsible for the recruitment of his position group as well as the recruitment of a geographic area.

Candidates will be expected to adhere to all guidelines and regulations set forth by the Mid-South Conference, the NAIA, and Ave Maria University. The coach will provide leadership and oversight to the student athletes, serving as a positive mentor, encouraging virtue development, and creating a positive image within the Ave Maria University mission for the football program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Major Duties:

Student Athlete Development – Planning and conducting the teaching, coaching, training, and individual student athlete skill development to prepare the team for competition. Implementing a virtue development program to foster integration of the Catholic faith.

 

Provide technical skill instruction to the student-athletes to aid in the skill development at practices.
Conduct individual training sessions with student athletes geared at skill development.
Prepares and oversees the implementation of practice plans that will prepare the team physically and mentally for competition.
Prepare and oversee the planning and implementation of camps and clinics.
Design and implement a virtue development program within the program that promotes integration of the Catholic faith.

Secondary Duties:

 

Recruiting –

Responsible to identify and recruit academically, mission fit, and athletically talented student athletes for football program.
Academics, Service, and Development

Monitor the academic, social, and personal development of student athletes.
Mentor the student athletes through virtue development.
Ongoing monitoring of academics amongst the sports student athletes to oversee their progress in degree advancement and meeting eligibility standards.
Reinforce the AMU mission and ideals of devotion to service by being a positive role model in the spiritual, character, and athletic development and monitoring of the women’s basketball team players.

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s Degree required

EXPERIENCE: One to three years of coaching experience required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General knowledge of the sport of football, and its rules & regulations.  Must possess excellent teaching, organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to pay close attention to details, interact effectively and appropriately with student athletes and evaluate prospects.  Must show a demonstrated knowledge of and strong commitment to the mission of the university and the teachings of the Catholic Church.  The coach is responsible for supporting the university in the formation of student athletes in the intellectual and moral virtues of the Catholic faith.

PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to teach the fundamentals of the sport, coach practices, games, travel to other locations; and the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10 – 50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a telephone, computer keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors with some potential for outdoor exposure to high temperatures, and safety and health hazards related to sport and weight room training. Will periodically travel for conference meetings, recruiting and games.
