Position Announcement:

Assistant Professor of Communications

The Communications Program at Ave Maria University seeks an assistant professor to teach a range of professional communication courses that will complement the program’s current offerings in rhetoric, media studies, and media production. The specialization is open, but successful candidates will be able to teach introductory courses in professional communication theory (such as Corporate, Organizational, Small Group, and Intercultural Communication) and upper-level courses in applied communication practice (like Public Relations, Crisis and Conflict Communication, Public/Nonprofit Advocacy, Event Planning, or Speechwriting).  The ability to teach content-specific courses like Sports or Health Communication or technical courses in Media Production will be considered favorably.

All candidates should be excited to develop professional communication courses for a program rooted in the rhetorical tradition and the Catholic intellectual, spiritual, and social traditions.  The ideal candidate will be capable of integrating professional communications practices into the framework of the Catholic liberal arts. Ph.D. in Communications, Communication Studies, or a related field required (ABD considered). Appointment begins Fall 2021.


Applicants should submit a cover letter, which includes a statement of research interests and relevant teaching competencies. Since the Communications Program is part of the interdisciplinary Department of Communications and Literature at Ave Maria University, which houses additional programs in Composition and Modern Languages, applicants are invited to briefly mention secondary teaching interests and competencies in rhetoric, writing, journalism, literature, language instruction and related areas.

Applicants should also submit a curriculum vitae and a short statement relating their philosophy of teaching to the University’s Catholic mission as expressed in Ex Corde Ecclesiae.
