Ave Maria University is seeking applicants for the Director of Sports Medicine position for a full time regular benefit eligible position that is available immediately.

The Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for program building including planning, recruiting, managing and directing the athletic training program, and for supervising and providing care for student athletes competing in the University’s athletic program. The head athletic trainer is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of injuries within the University’s comprehensive sports medicine program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Directs, organizes and administers the Athletic Training Program.
Directs, instructs and supervises the activities of the four other full-time Athletic Trainers.
Prevention of athletic injuries and illnesses.
Recruits, supervises and develops the Athletic Trainers.
Directs and administers the provision of athletic training services including the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries of several intercollegiate athletic teams.
Evaluation of athletic injuries.
Provides first aid and emergency aid for athletic-related injuries and determines appropriate medical referral as warranted.
Creates, develops and implements therapeutic interventions and rehabilitative protocols to treat athletic injuries.
Organizes pre-participation Physical Exams.
Provides counseling and education to student athletes
Coordinates and assists with home and away event athletic training coverage.
Assists with coordination and scheduling of medical coverage for home and away competitions
Purchases, inventories, and monitors all supplies and equipment for Athletic Training.
Works with doctors and other allied health professionals to deliver care to student athletes.
Coordinates all athletic injury insurance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Familiarity with NAIA governing rules and ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the NAIA and Ave Maria University.
Provide qualified and adequate athletic training coverage for student athletes;
Recruit and provide training to athletic trainers;
Handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment, organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities;
Integrate resources, knowledge of management methods and ability to provide administrative guidance within area of responsibility and provide direct training and supervision as needed;
Apply budgeting and fiscal planning techniques within financial constraints;
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public;
Communicate effectively – orally, by phone, in person, and in writing;
Represent the department and University in a friendly, courteous and professional manner;
Respond to emergency situations in a timely manner;
Use a personal computer, Microsoft Office software, and other office equipment;
Commitment to the mission, values, goals and plans of Ave Maria University as a Catholic higher education university as expressed in Ex Corde Ecclesiae.

EDUCATION: Master’s degree required.
EXPERIENCE: Four years minimum of collegiate athletic training experience.
CERTIFICATION: Certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification required.
LICENSURE: State Athletic Training Licensure required.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Supervisors are responsible for maintaining an environment that is free from discrimination, intimidation, coercion or harassment, including sexual harassment. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to electronics work, exposure to outdoor elements, and moderate to loud noise levels. While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be required to work evenings and weekends, and to travel overnight to cover away games.
SAFETY: Supervisors are responsible for the safety of their employees by creating and maintaining a safe work environment. New employees should be provided with safety instruction during the first 30 days of employment and receive annual refresher safety training. Supervisors should report any unsafe working conditions or practices to the Director of Athletics. Supervisors should insure that employees work in a safe manner and submit injury/accident reports to the Office of Human Resources as soon as possible and no later than 24 hours of notification.
PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to attend and treat athletes at home and away games, with the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10 – 70 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual and auditory acuity to exam and treat athletes.
