Vice Principal – Students (2023-2024)

The Donahue Academy Vice Principal of Students plays a vital role in the education of children through the formation of virtuous students and the oversight of Catholic classical curriculum. He or she takes an important leadership position in our school, helping to cultivate a setting from which students encounter Christ, pursue virtue, and cultivate excellence in all things. Furthermore, the next Vice Principal of Students joins a community of like-minded Catholic educators with all the support, friendship, and strength that this fellowship provides.

Candidates will have leadership experience; demonstrable excellence in student formation, including the formation of virtue in students; and a well-grounded vision for the spiritual, moral, and intellectual formation of the human person in light of the Catholic tradition. The Donahue Academy Vice Principal of Students delights to enkindle the love of truth, goodness, and beauty in others. Candidates should possess a passion for Catholic classical education and a love for their fellow man that is both humble and relentless. The Donahue Academy Vice Principal of Students is called to support and nurture a joyful and ennobling academic community.

At Donahue Academy, we believe that the pursuit of the transcendental realities cannot be separated from Christ Who is the source of all truth. It is only in the context of our allowing God His due place, with a reverence faithful to the Magisterium of the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church, that an authentic and rigorous liberal arts education is possible.

Donahue Academy was founded in 2007 and has quickly risen to the top as one of the foremost Catholic classical schools in the nation. Plans for further growth are underway, with an expected enrollment of 420 preK-12th-grade students for the 2023-24 school year.

Competencies/Qualifications

Catholic Classical Education

The school leader has a demonstrable understanding of — and affinity for — the Catholic classical tradition. In addition, his or her actions reflect prudence and magnanimity. He or she is a capable proponent of Catholic education and the classical tradition.

 

Leadership Team

The school leader understands how to work as part of a leadership team and is able to lead other teams (deans, chairs, etc.).

 

Student Formation

The school leader is a capable of forming students in virtue. He or she is familiar with, and proponent of, St. John’s Bosco’s method of relentlessly pursuing the good of each student while being a presence within their midst.

 

Student Culture/People Leadership

The school leader understands and successfully influences the elements of a strong student culture, including explicit formation in the virtues. The leader has a vision for strong student culture and articulates it clearly and compellingly.

 

Emotional Intelligence

The school leader is self-aware and self-disciplined, aware of his/her impact on others and able to manage relationships with trust, candor, and love.

 

Experience

The school leader is able to get the job done. This is true across the many stakeholder groups and areas of school function, including student success, strong culture, and operational results. The leader is effective on a social/interpersonal level, navigating the right path between social and professional functioning.

 

 

Extended description of Vice Principal of Students activities:

 

·         Oversees discipline and formation in the Catholic classical mission for all students

·         Works with Deans for level-appropriate responses to challenges

·         Manages all hallway, uniform, lunch, protocols

·         General supervisory duties

·         General admin duties as delegated by Principal

·         Proactively promotes virtue throughout the school culture and experience by word, example and positive expectations of excellence.

·         Provides mentoring for students towards the virtuous life

·         Track student discipline record & accumulation

·         Annually reviews the discipline and decorum policies of the school and recommends changes

·         Coordinate detentions, including Saturdays

·         Meet with students as needed re: formation

·         Investigate issues related to discipline and school safety

·         Monitor school lockers and ensure cleanliness

·         Oversee end of the year activities like locker-clean out

·         Work with the VP of academics on concerns that cross over between academics and behavior regarding both student and faculty need for improvement and growth.

·         Assists with the supervision and evaluation of faculty and staff as assigned by the principal

·         Provides pre-service and in-service for members of the faculty and staff around student discipline and social formation.

·         Meet with teachers as needed re: feedback from student concerns; Faculty mentoring as needed

·         Assists with the supervision and evaluation of faculty and staff as assigned by the principal

·         Meet with parents as needed re: student issues

·         Provide active supervision during student breaks, lunch, and passing periods

·         Monitor and direct the carline both before and after school

·         Attend all major after-school events to ensure discipline and safety

·         Oversee the Mass study-hall

·         Constantly monitor for building safety, potential hazards and security issues

·         Ensure all doors and gates locked

·         Provide disciplinary data to Principal quarterly

·         Ensure Fire Drills and safety drills and training occur

·         Update and instruct faculty on use of Navigate prepared app

·         Arranges for student programing in areas of drugs, alcohol, addiction and safety.

·         Work with local law enforcement to ensure building and school safety

·         Responds to student emergency situations as the occur

·         Coordinate faculty and admin supervision duties throughout the year (carlines, lunch, hallways, events)

·         Fill necessary duties in the absence of the principal

·         Other duties as assigned by the principal
