Schedule:  8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday; On-call required several evenings and alternating weekends throughout the month with occasional evenings or weekends, as required.

The Instructional Technologist, a key member of Franciscan’s eLearning Support Team, reports to the Senior Instructional Designer and Technologist and works closely with Information Technology Services to support students, faculty, and staff in implementing and using the learning management system (currently Blackboard, migrating to Canvas) and other instructional technology tools.  The Instructional Technologist will also work closely with the design team for updating, building and maintaining online courses.




1.     Provide excellent, compassionate support to students , faculty, and staff who access and use the learning management system and other eLearning tools in-person, by telephone, email, web conferencing, and screen sharing.


2.     Manage day-to-day administrative tasks on the learning management system such as creating courses, modifying enrollments, creating organizations, adding system announcements, etc.


3.     Troubleshoot and maintain Blackboard and Canvas learning management systems by researching and solving technical issues; updating, testing, and implementing LTI integrations and updates; working with Blackboard and Canvas technical support to solve problems; and managing storage and utilization of system.


4.     Assist instructional design staff with building, maintaining, and updating courses.


5.     Collaborate with Information Technology staff on LDAP, Student Information System integration, and technical support.


6.     Optimize and expand functionality of current technologies and research additional tools that could enhance the students’ learning and faculty teaching experience.

Work Experience


·         1-2 years of experience using and providing eLearning support to university students and faculty in use of eLearning tools or equivalent experience.

·         1-2 years of experience supporting web browsers and mobile (Android and iOS) devices and their interface with third-party applications.

·         Experience and expertise in and passion for working collaboratively with diverse groups of people.  Experience in using and supporting a learning management system (Canvas preferred, Blackboard helpful), web video conferencing (Collaborate and Zoom preferred), video recording and editing (Adobe and VidGrid preferred), and experience supporting computer and video hardware, peripherals (i.e., web cams), and both Mac and Windows operating systems.

·         Evidence of understanding of current and emerging technologies and ability and passion to quickly learn new technologies used for collaboration, teaching, and learning.

·         Experience managing server administration, writing simple scripts, REST integrations, and testing applications a plus.



·         Interpersonal Skills:  Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate and support people effectively in-person, via telephone, email, and web video, as well as demonstrated tact and discretion.

·         Quality of Work:  Demonstrated collegiality, professionalism, and passion to serve others and go above and beyond what is required to support the mission and help others learn and succeed.

·         Drive for Results:  Desire to work and contribute to a fast-paced, small team environment.  Has an eagerness to pitch in wherever and whenever is needed.



·         Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred, but a combination of education and experience will be considered.


Technical Skills

·         Demonstrated excellence in and passion for supporting students and faculty using a learning management system such as Blackboard, Canvas, and other eLearning tools in higher education.

·         Demonstrated excellence in and passion for supporting students and faculty using video recording and editing equipment as well as virtual classroom environments such as Zoom.

·         Demonstrated excellence in and passion for using and supporting applications for creating engaging instructional materials including MS Office, Adobe Suite, and the ability to quickly learn new applications as needed. Competency in script writing and web design a plus.


Workplace Factors

·         Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and can be negotiated to meet departmental needs and the needs of the successful candidate for this position.

·         On-call required several evenings and alternating weekends throughout the month.

·         Sits or stands in front of computer for long periods of time.
