The WordPress Developer is a vital member of the University Web Team who collaborates with Marketing & Communications towards the successful production of the University’s marketing web properties. The WordPress Developer is someone who is highly proficient in WordPress web development and comfortable with back-end technology. They are someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, learn rapidly, and master web technologies and techniques.




1.     Manage day-to-day tasks by providing front-end support and page creation for the University’s main marketing and communication applications such as Franciscan.edu, SteubenvilleConferences.com, and other engagement platforms.

2.     Troubleshoot and maintain web applications by researching and solving technical issues; page rendering, error rates, time to interaction, DOM processing, ADA compliance best-practices, etcetera.

3.     Create and maintain custom WordPress plugins, themes, and other components for various University websites.

4.     Collaborate with the University Web Team towards the planning, execution, and maintenance of emerging media platforms.

5.     Optimize and expand functionality of current technologies and research additional tools that could enhance the University’s general Marketing & Communication efforts.

6.     Provide input and support for University Web Governance by researching and testing industry best practices for an effective web publications process.

Must understand, support and embrace the mission of Franciscan University of Steubenville and possess the following:


Work Experience


·         1-3 years of experience with providing support for web content management systems or related applications.

·         Experience with creating and maintaining custom WordPress themes and plugins.

·         Experience converting a provided web design into production.

·         Evidence in understanding of current and emerging technologies and ability to quickly learn new technologies used for marketing and communications.

·         Demonstrated back-end development or server-side administration a plus.

·         Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively in a team setting, as well as demonstrated tact and discretion.

·         Creativity: Ability to develop web applications utilizing technologies that accomplish the needs of the client in a way that appeals to the target audience.




·         Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred, but a combination of education and experience will be considered.


Technical Skills


·         Demonstrated excellence in PHP (this position creates and maintains custom WordPress themes, plugins, and custom components).


·         Demonstrated competency in front-end web development through using HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and SQL.


·         Server-side administration a plus.


Workplace Factors


·         Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.


·         Occasional weekends and evenings, as required.


·         Sits or stands in front of a computer for long periods of time.
