The University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota, is seeking a professor of Politics (open rank) with specialization in political philosophy and/or theory to begin service in the fall semester of 2023.

 

The Politics program at the University of Mary is designed to be broad, with the areas of political philosophy, theory, and science complementing each other, while engaging in interdisciplinary dialogue with areas such as history, philosophy, economics, business, and theology. Core and minor/major courses in Politics form students to serve the common good by encouraging a political orientation and political action rooted in a robust metaphysical conception of reality. Applicants should therefore be well-versed in the history of political philosophy from Plato to the present, its role in shaping Western culture, its relationship with the Catholic intellectual tradition, and its enduring relevance for contemporary political thought and practice. Further, applicants are expected to have demonstrable excellence in teaching and an active research agenda.

 

All faculty are expected to demonstrate a willingness to support and advance the Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine mission and identity of the University of Mary (see https://www.umary.edu/about/mission-identity).

 

Qualifications and Requirements Include:

 

• Duties include regular teaching of POL 101: Responsible Citizenship, a core requirement, as well as courses serving Politics majors and minors and students in other majors for which POL courses are requirements or electives.

• Upholds and supports the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary

• Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities

• Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the School of Arts and Sciences and throughout the university, in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ
