Director of Counseling and Wellness Services

 

The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is seeking applicants for a full-time Director of Counseling and Wellness Services. This position is within the Enrollment and Student Engagement Division and reports directly to the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students.

Summary:

The Director of Counseling & Wellness Services is a critical position on the Student Affairs leadership team and spearheads counseling and wellness strategies across campus. This position oversees the Counseling & Wellness Office and collaborates with departments on strategies that focus on critical student success metrics. This position will actively contribute towards furthering our Student Affairs Board of Trustee charges to strengthen UST’s (a) student success efforts, and (b) Catholic mission and faith integration efforts.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Oversee all counseling and wellness efforts across campus, including proactive initiatives and crisis intervention
Lead the Counseling team, including licensed Counselors, the Assistant Director of Student Wellness & Persistence Initiatives, and Coordinator of Counseling & Wellness Services
Serve as an advisor to the Care Team that supports students who are on an active watch list
Spearhead a formal training program for faculty, staff, and student leaders that targets competencies surrounding mental health and wellness
Identify, recommend, and implement holistic care strategies that support the goal of student retention
Oversee the development of a proactive wellness coaching model for the campus that contributes to overall holistic wellness
Explore a partnership with UST’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program that utilizes graduate students for wellness coaching and professional counseling practicums
Lead select cross-departmental committees focusing on strategies that prioritize student success outcomes
Utilizing appropriate technology, create new initiatives and access current programs and services to increase departmental effectiveness and meet student needs
Collaborate with other University departments on mental health and wellness strategies
Monitor program budgets and control of expenditures
Consult as appropriate with faculty, staff, and parents regarding their concerns about students
Cultivate and maintain collaborative working relationships with external providers of mental health services for the purpose of referrals and the coordination of a continuum of care for students
Set and participate in the counselor on-call schedule to support student emergencies and crises
Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs

Supervisory responsibilities:

This position supervises full-time licensed Counselors, the Assistant Director of Student Wellness & Persistence Initiatives, and Coordinator of Counseling & Wellness Services

Experience and Education:

Master’s or doctoral degree in Psychology, Counseling or Social Work
Appropriate professional licensure in Texas
A minimum of three years of professional experience in a college or university setting is strongly preferred
Previous supervisory and budgetary experience is highly preferred.
Intermediate level of proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally, including making presentations to groups of various sizes
A thorough familiarity and knowledge of typical student affairs policies, protocols, and procedures is preferred
Ability to serve and support a diverse student body

Working conditions:

Position may require irregular office hours including after-hours and weekend work to attend student meetings and events. Office hours will be established in consultation with the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and may include virtual components. Physical requirements are those of a typical office.
