POSITION SUMMARY

The Academic Advisor advises undeclared and online undergraduate students, maintains advising data, facilitates curricular changes in the catalog and student information system, and assists in planning academic events such as orientation, advising, academic awards, and graduation.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1.     Advise undeclared majors or otherwise exploratory students according to degree requirements.  Assist in advising online undergraduate students.  Advise during events such as Baron Days and Orientation.  Assist students with issues pertaining to academic policy and procedure.  Mentor students experiencing academic difficulty.

 

2.     Maintain advising data in our student information system.  Responsibilities include:  building advising trees, editing advising requirement codes, maintaining advisor-advisee relationships, building advising cycles and academic plans, making alterations, and other technical operations, as needed.

 

3.     Prepare curriculum proposals for distribution, monitor the approval process, update changes in the catalog, major program guides and advising module.

 

4.     Assist in the planning of academic events such as orientation advising, academic awards, and graduation.

 

5.     Provide professional development for faculty advisors via workshops and distribution of advising support materials.

REQUIREMENTS

Must understand, support and embrace the mission of Franciscan University of Steubenville and possess the following:

 

Work Experience

·         2 – 4 years of experience in higher education with an emphasis in academic advising, academic success, and/or degree auditing preferred.

·         Experience working with student information systems or comparable database software.

·         Experience with university catalog software preferred.

·         Strong Interpersonal Skills:  Communicates effectively both formally and informally; relates to others at various levels of the organization; sensitive to others’ perspectives; and utilizes diplomacy and tact to diffuse high-tension situations.

·         Technical Ability:  Familiarity with databases; able to understand the logic and functionality of data elements; able to see the big picture of systems and processes; and troubleshoot issues that arise.

·         Project Management:  Effectively identifies and organizes steps, tasks, resources, and timing needed to accomplish goals; creates and uses reporting and feedback processes to monitor progress and adjust as needed.

 

Education

·         Bachelor’s degree, preferably from a liberal arts school that emphasizes the importance of integrating curriculum from a variety of academic fields.

·         Some training in database management preferred

 

Technical Skills

·         Ability to use a Student Information System, experience with Jenzabar EX product preferred.

·         Ability to write reports using a database preferred.  Knowledge of SQL statements preferred.

·         Ability to utilize web portals to manage curricular and student information, experience with SmartCatalog preferred.

·         Sits or stands in front of computer for long periods of time.
