Schedule:  Full-time; Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., some evenings and weekends

POSITION SUMMARY

The Career Counselor/Assistant Director of Career Services coordinates and provides services and programs related to career exploration, job- and internship-searches, and the development of career competencies. Supporting the Director of Career Services, the Career Counselor/Assistant Director advances Franciscan University’s institutional-wide efforts to promote a culture where students, staff, and faculty strive to discern and intentionally live out their personal vocations, thereby experiencing authentic fulfillment and perfect joy.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Provide career counseling and coaching to individual students and alumni.

2.    Develop and deliver group presentations and programs on Career Services topics. Coordinate events including job and internship fairs, networking events, guest speakers, and panel discussions.

3.    Assisting the Director of Career Services, develop, direct, promote, measure, and assess services and programs for students and alumni that promote career exploration and self-understanding, including but not limited to individual counseling, group presentations, assessments, print and online resources, referrals, coaching/mentoring, networking, and events.

4.    Assisting the Director of Career Services, develop, direct, promote, measure, and assess services and programs that assist students and alumni with researching and applying for internships and jobs, including but not limited to use of online resources such as Handshake and LinkedIn, resume and cover letter preparation, and interview preparation.

5.    Assisting the Director of Career Services, identify, promote and assess internship opportunities for students. Assist faculty, supervisors, coaches, advisors, and others to help students develop career competencies through academic coursework, field experiences and internships, student and leadership positions, and other experiential learning opportunities.

6.    Serve as a subject-matter expert for best practices in student career exploration and preparation, internships and employment trends.

7.    Develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with employers, alumni, and faculty

8.    Other assigned duties that advance the goals of Franciscan University and the Office for Personal Vocation.

REQUIREMENTS

Must understand, support and embrace the mission of Franciscan University of Steubenville and possess the following:

 

 

Work Experience

·         1-3 years experience in college/university career services, corporate recruiting, human resources, career development, counseling, or comparable experience.

·         1-3 years experience working with high school students or young adults.

·         1-3 years experience guiding and teaching the writing of resumes and cover letters, interview preparation and job search strategies.

·         Managing and Measuring Work: Clearly articulates expected outcomes for both completed work products and interim milestones. Effectively identifies and organizes steps, tasks, resources and timing needed to accomplish goals. Monitors the work process, progress and results providing appropriate review and feedback loops.

 

·         Written and Verbal Communication: Clearly and comfortably expresses one’s views and thoughts to different listeners/audiences. Presents effectively in multiple settings: one-on-one, small/large groups, peers, staff and managers. Knows when to use written communications instead of verbal communications.

 

Education

·         Bachelors degree required; Masters degree in education, counseling, college student personnel, or related field preferred.

 

·         Certification as a Global Career Development Facilitator is helpful.

 

Technical Skills

·         Proficiency or experience in web-based career services applications including Handshake and Pathway U. is preferred

·         Proficiency in standard desktop software applications (e-mail, MS Word and MS Excel, etc.)

·         Proficiency in virtual communication platforms (e.g., Zoom)

·         Proficiency in creating and implementing print and electronic marketing materials (e.g. Canva, Instagram)

 

Workplace Factors

·         Some evenings and weekends required.
