The Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach will be responsible for the oversight of the intercollegiate Men’s and Women’s Tennis program at Franciscan University of Steubenville.  The position’s most important duties include instructing student-athletes on the rules and fundamentals of the sport during practice (both in team and individual settings), preparing the student-athletes for competition, and coaching on game days. The Head Coach is responsible for supporting the academic and spiritual development of each student athlete.



1.     Game day strategy and coaching.

2.     Plan and execute practices and training programs, including individual and team film study.

3.     Specific position/individual athlete instruction.

4.     Promote the academic development of each student athlete and a team culture of academic excellence.

5.     Promote the spiritual development of each student athlete and a team culture where the Catholic faith and Christian moral principles are integrated into the daily activities and overall program.

6.     Learn and comply with all relevant NCAA and conference rules and regulations.

7.     Communicate with prospective student athletes in accordance with NCAA regulations/coordinate visits with the Admissions office.

8.     Coordinate with other Athletics staff members and other university departments on logistical issues such as contest scheduling, team travel, field/venue maintenance, and game day preparation.

9.     Other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or Assistant Athletic Directors.

Work Experience

·         2 – 3 years of coaching and/or playing experience required.

·         College tennis coaching and/or playing experience preferred.

·         Knowledge of D3 and NCAA rules.  Recruiting experience and knowledge of recruiting services.



·         Technical/Functional Skills: Actively seeks ways to practice and continually improve the required skills or knowledge. Demonstrates effective coaching skills and knowledge of coaching tactics in the development of the student athlete.

·         Developing Self: Continually assesses one’s skills and identifies areas that can be further improved.

·         Decision Quality: Effectively blends analysis, experience and intuition in the decision-making process. Implements daily practice and a game day plan.

·         Dealing with Ambiguity: Works well in situations where there is no single right answer.

·         Verbal Communications: Very good communicator.  Uses effective speaking and listening techniques to ensure clear and actionable communications.




·         Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

·         CPR and First Aid Certification required.


Technical Skills

·         Knowledge of collegiate level coaching tactics.

·         Knowledge of recruiting software.

·         Microsoft office products.

·         Understand D3 and NCAA rules and regulations.

Workplace Factors

·         Must understand basic set up of court, venue scheduling/maintenance and game day preparation.

·         Must be able to endure long periods of time coaching in both practice and game settings.

·         Must be able to handle travel arrangements and drive a 12-passenger van.

·         Must be able to schedule games in a timely manner to be able to report game scores and statistics after games.
