General Description:

Seeking a skilled and enthusiastic music teacher for a TK-12th grade Classical school in San Marcos, CA. Music is an important part of a classical curriculum. It is a pillar of the Quadrivium, thus it teaches students to find order and Beauty in the universe.

The candidate must be well versed in knowledge of early childhood music education, effective vocal pedagogy and understanding of singing kinesiology. They must have excellent knowledge of Catholic sacred music and Gregorian Chant. They must also possess a working knowledge of magisterial teaching on sacred music and its role in the sacred liturgy. An understanding of the Ward Method (or a comparable method) is a necessity. All music is sung a cappella.

Grades:

General music: grades TK-5
Grades TK-5th have a general music education. Expertise in early childhood music education and development is important. Familiarity with the Fierebend method is a plus.
Grades TK-2nd practice music skills using fun and playful techniques to introduce them to musical concepts.
Grades 3-5 begin to expand their music knowledge with solfege, music theory, vocal exploration, the orchestra and various orchestral works, singing and connecting their history lessons with music. Using the classical model, the candidate must have the ability to bridge music with history and include lessons in social dancing, work songs, cultural and folk songs. (Ex: When 5th grade is learning about the American Revolution, music lessons can include “How fife and drum music played a role on the American Revolution battlefields. If the 4th grade is learning about the Gold Rush, songs from the Gold Rush era where they learn about the messages they were bringing to folks in the East, and also folk dances from the time period, etc)
Gregorian Chant is introduced to students in the 4th grade.

Middle School Choir: grades 6-8
Grade 6-8 students are all required to take choir where they learn the fundamentals of choral singing. They continue their studies in solfege and music theory. They learn sacred hymns, Gregorian Chant and polyphony.

High School Choir: grades 9-12
The High School Choral Ensemble is a high school elective. The choir prepares pieces to sing for weekly school Mass, as well as various school activities throughout the year. They continue their study of Gregorian Chant, polyphony and sacred hymns.

High School Sacred Music Appreciation Class
All high school students are required to take a Sacred Music Appreciation class. The class is designed to teach students the rich history of our Catholic Sacred Music traditions.

Choral Performances/Masses
There are several performances and Masses that students will sing for throughout the year. The music teacher is expected to prepare the students and help orchestrate the performances and Mass.
