Director of Human Resources


The University of Mary in Bismarck, ND is inviting applications for the Director of Human Resources position. The Director of Human Resources provides comprehensive HR expertise in areas including recruitment and employment, compensation, benefits, compliance, employee relations and employee training.


Candidates will be invited to demonstrate a willingness to support the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary.


Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the Human Resources Department and supervises department staff
  • Oversees the recruitment, selection process, and onboarding process of new hires in conjunction with the hiring manager and in accord with the university’s Hiring for Mission policy
  • At the direction of the budget committee, administers a competitive compensation program for university faculty, administration, and staff positions
  • In consultation with the Salary and Benefits committee, develops and recommends competitive benefits programs and assists the Director of Payroll and Budget in managing employee benefits programs
  • Develops and implements an effective university-wide performance management process
  • Conducts exit interviews, analyzes data, and makes recommendations to management for continuous improvement as appropriate
  • Serves as administrator for the SafeColleges training platform. Recommends and implements approved organizational development programs and training
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures in support of the university’s mission and leads and oversees the maintenance and annual update of the Employee Handbook and the Teaching Faculty Resource Handbook
  • Provides management with techniques which may assist in the resolution of employee relations issues and serves as a mediator between management and employee when appropriate
  • Serves as an advisor to the President’s Council
  • Manages records of personnel transactions such as hires, promotions, letters of appointment, transfers, and performance reviews and terminations
  • Develops and maintains human resources policies and procedures
  • Serves as a member of the Catholic Social Teaching, Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, Safety Committee, and Data Standards Committee
  • Oversees HIPAA, ADA, and EEOC, workers comp regulations, unemployment claims and requirements, and ensures all compliance requirements are being met

Desired Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience include:

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in public, personnel, or business administration and/or human resources
  • Preferred: Master’s degree and/or certification in human resources
  • Required: A minimum of 7 years of experience in all phases of human resources administration and prior supervisory experience
  • Preferred: Prior experience in higher education
  • Upholds and supports the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary
  • Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities
  • Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the Office of Human Resources and throughout the university, in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and policies related to human resources
  • Ability to prepare and analyze comprehensive reports
  • Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, legal counsel, and the general public
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively administer a personnel system
  • Ability to perform to a high level of accuracy and attentiveness to detail
  • Thorough knowledge of human resource functions, programs, and legal requirements
  • Knowledge of trends and developments (best practices) in the human resource field
  • Demonstrated ability to handle conflicts in the workplace and mediate difficult employer/employee relations situations
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and manage tight deadlines
  • Proficiency with database and spreadsheet programs
