Vice President for Student Development

The Vice President for Student Development is responsible for the planning, budgeting, collaborative management, implementation, and overall visionary leadership for programs and services needed to create a high-quality student life program in support of student success and the university’s mission. The appointee provides vision and direction to university ministry, residence life, new student orientation, student activities, student recreation and wellness, student involvement, educational and cultural programming, student conduct, counseling services, and the student health clinic.


Candidates will be invited to demonstrate a willingness to support the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary.


Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

·       Plans, coordinates, and provides leadership in the areas of strategic plan implementation, human resources, policy development, budgeting, and the administration of student development units.

·       Participates as a member of the President’s Council and serves in a senior policy-making capacity

·       Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws and provides advice and guidance to administrators with respect to risk management as it involves student life and student services.  Oversees the annual update and distribution of the student handbook.

·       Sets performance expectations and student service standards for each office and annually monitors and evaluates office functions against those standards.  Helps achieve target student retention goals

·       Provides assistance with university-level accreditation activities to the university’s liaison to the Higher Learning Commission (HLC)

·       Cultivates knowledge of national trends in student life and local and national market analyses of student services, providing data-driven leadership with short- and long-term planning to meet the dynamic needs of the non-traditional student

·       Develops and manages departmental budgets, allocates personnel and fiscal resources, and reviews and develops policies for consistency with institutional needs and professional guidelines and for compliance with university policies and state and federal statutes.

·       Consults appropriate legal counsel to determine the relevance of local, state, regional, and national agencies and organizations regarding matters related to the position’s oversight responsibilities

·       Attends Commencement and all scheduled meetings of the Board of Trustees, the executive committee of the Board of Trustees, University Chapter, and the President’s Council.  Chairs the Student Development Council, serves on the facilities and space committee and other committees as assigned.

·       Hires, develops, and leads staff members who serve in Student Development to support the vision and mission of the university

·       Performs other duties as assigned


Desired Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience include:

·       Required/Strongly Preferred: Doctoral degree

·       Required: A minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior administrative position with supervisory and budgetary responsibilities or related experience in higher education

·       Preferred: 5+ years of experience in the administration of student life programs and student services at a mission-driven, residential, private, or public college or university

·       Upholds and supports the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary

·       Promotes the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities

·       Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the Office of Student Development and throughout the university, in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ


Knowledge and Skills Required:

·       Demonstrated knowledge of best practices with regard to student retention and student services

·       Ability to communicate the mission and values of the university effectively

·       Ability to follow and enforce procedures and policies established by the university and in full compliance with regulatory and auditing guidelines

·       Ability to use computer applications effectively, especially Microsoft Office software

·       Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
