Accounting Clerk

Controller’s Office

The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is seeking applicants for a full-time Accounting Clerk in the Controller’s Office. This position reports directly to the Accounting Manager.

The Controller’s Office is seeking trustworthy candidates who work efficiently without sacrificing accuracy. The Accounting Clerk can expect to work with large amounts of numerical data, handle multiple tasks with deadlines, and provide transparent and complete reports to management. Applicants should have an understanding of accounting and financial practices and regulations and possess strong computer, verbal, and written communication skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Records daily cash activities for all accounts
Processes daily reconciliation of Cleared A/P Checks in PeopleSoft
Research all Bank Exception Notifications and verify from A/P to release or deny payments.
Processes electronic payments as needed.
Prepares and processes monthly, quarterly, and annual journal entries.
Records correction and other journal entries
Reconciles AP and Operating Cash
Supports UA with daily cash activity and other UA needs.
Reconciles GL Accounts
Assists Accounting Supervisor with all financial operations.
Monitors Finance@stthom.edu mailbox
Collaborates with other members of the finance team.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Attention to detail: The Accounting Clerk will have to reconcile accounts, noticing any discrepancies and miscalculations. This requires strong observation skills and keen attention to detail.
Problem-solving skills: The Accounting Clerk works closely with the accounting team. Reconciling accounts requires a comparison between reports, accounts, and line items. Identifying discrepancies and resolving errors efficiently is essential to be successful.
Skills with technology: Skills with Accounting software, spreadsheet programs and standard email are all key elements in this type of work. Being comfortable with these programs will enable the candidate to succeed as the Accounting Clerk.
Communication: Because the Accounting Clerk interacts with multiple staff members, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively is beneficial to succeed in this position. Phone conversations, written communication via email and formal letters, as well as in-person meetings all require the Accounting Clerk to have the ability to convey their ideas, concerns, and solutions.
Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree
At least 1 year of general accounting experience or equivalent experience.
Ability to prioritize and self-direct, analyze situations, identify situations where appropriate to make decisions.
Experience working with PeopleSoft accounting applications is preferred.
Skill in researching, analyzing, and evaluating complex financial data.
Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
Ability to analyze and interpret data for accuracy. Detail oriented.
Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to provide a high level of customer service and establish and maintain effective interdepartmental communications and relationships.
Proficiency in various computer applications including spreadsheets and word processing software.
