Office of Counseling and Wellness
The University of St. Thomas (www.stthom.edu), a private Catholic university, located in Houston, Texas, the nation’s fourth largest city, committed to the liberal arts and to the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, is seeking a full-time Counselor as a member of the Office of Counseling and Wellness Services. The position reports directly to the Director, Counseling and Wellness Services.
The Counselor position is a member of the Counseling & Wellness Services team and a part of the Student Affairs organization. This position plays a critical role in providing mental health and wellness support to our campus community on a continuous basis. The Counselor position will actively contribute towards furthering our Student Affairs Board of Trustee charges to strengthen UST’s (a) Catholic mission and faith integration efforts, and (b) student success efforts.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Develop and implement campus outreach programs to student groups regarding personal development, mental health issues and well-being
Manage individual clinical caseload and associated documentation
Provide psychological crisis intervention on campus as needed including occasional on-call accessibility by telephone outside business hours
Spearhead collaborative efforts to enhance overall student wellness and persistance
Responsible for student personal, developmental, and academic skill-building counseling for undergraduate and graduate student populations
Conduct faculty and staff consultations and provide training as requested
Provide counseling support services (information and referral) to University personnel
Serve on the counselor on call rotation
Establish and nurture relationships with external providers for appropriate referrals
Education and Experience:
A Master’s Degree required in psychology, counseling, or social work is required
Licensed mental health professional in the State of Texas; licensed psychologist, LPC, or Licensed CSW required
A minimum of two years’ experience in providing psychological counseling services to an adult population required
Experience in a college or university counseling center highly preferred
High level of competency in professional, ethical and legal standards in the field of mental health
Experience working with a multicultural population is required
Demonstrate a high degree of awareness and knowledge about college mental health issues
Effective and proficient oral and written communication skills
Familiarity with greater Houston area community mental health resources
Computer skills that include working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint), database management, and familiarity with online research protocol; experience with Titanium and AIM preferred
Required to maintain their own professional liability insurance;
Required to maintain all State of Texas licensing credentials and continuing education units (CEU’s) requirements
Demonstrates an understanding of UST’s Catholic mission
Counselor must be available for limited evening hours as assigned
This position may require occasional irregular office hours including after-hours and weekend work. Office hours will be established in consultation with the Director of Counseling & Wellness Services and may include a virtual component. Physical requirements are those of a typical office.
