Instructional Designer

The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, the nation’s fourth largest city, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is inviting applications for an Instructional Designer in the University’s Office of Academic Affairs. The position reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Director of Online Education.


The Instructional Designer will play multiple roles of facilitator, innovator, researcher, and developer working with various academic departments and subject matter experts to develop learning objectives, conduct needs assessments, and design programs. The Instructional Designer will select and use a variety of techniques to define and develop instructional materials leveraging technology to deliver them.

The Instructional Designer will develop learning experiences specifically for online delivery. The Instructional Designer may serve as a project manager, manage the work of others to deliver courses and achieve better student learning. The Instructional Designers will often train faculty or other staff to leverage technology in delivering online content.


Major Duties and Responsibilities

Design and develop educational systems and learning tools that meet the demand of the University’s academic programs and curriculum

Work collaboratively to build teaching environments for faculty and administrators

Work closely with deans, faculty, and other academic leaders to analyze data in order to understand curriculum needs

Train faculty on an ongoing basis on how to utilize new learning tools

Act as a liaison between academic entities and Information Technology support.

Deliver training and support resources, workshops, orientations, and courses to faculty and students

Provide ongoing support to students, faculty, and staff in using academic technologies to enable teaching and learning.

Participate in various academic meetings as needed to stay current with infrastructure changes, policies and procedures

Knowledge Required

Demonstrate an understanding of learning science, theories, and principles and how they relate to instructional design and student learning outcomes

Have knowledge of best practices in instructional technologies

Must have a through working knowledge of current instructional technologies and office product software including Microsoft Office 365 Products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Forms, and SharePoint), Adobe PDF, Google Sheets, and ChatBox.

Demonstrated ability to follow best practices of instructional technologies

Possess excellent oral, written, and instructional communication skills are required to work effectively within a team-oriented environment and with multi-disciplinary faculty with varying levels of instructional technology skills

Ability to collaborate in multiple projects at different stages while meeting deadlines and quality standards

Ability to work with a sense of urgency and independently, under minimal supervision, to effectively manage multiple projects

Ability to facilitate collaboration, support, and approval from a variety of stakeholders

Outstanding customer service skills and the ability to create immediate rapport with a wide variety of constituents

Ability and willingness to learn and adhere to University processes, requirements, deadlines, etc.

Demonstrated ability to process information quickly and accurately

Demonstrated ability to think and act creatively

Ability to work with ethnically, culturally, and socially diverse students, staff, faculty, and other constituencies.

Education and Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a related field required. A Master’s level degree preferred.


Required Years and Type of Experience

Minimum of 3 years of direct experience related to the disciplines of education technology, instructional technologies, technology applications, or information system

A comprehensive level of knowledge of various technologies in an academic environment required

Minimum of 3 years of experience delivering training workshops or training packages


Experience in providing technical support in a higher education environment


Experience with learning management software is strongly preferred
