Open Rank Professor – Sociology

Center for Faith & Culture

The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic university in the heart of Houston, Texas, invites applications for a full-time faculty position in sociology. This faculty position will be open rank and will be housed in UST’s Nesti Center for Faith & Culture. The ideal candidate will contribute to advancing the mission of the Nesti Center through teaching as well as maintaining an active research agenda centered on Catholicism (and potentially the wider Christian landscape) specifically from a social scientific perspective. The start date for the position is August 2024.

About the Nesti Center for Faith & Culture

Founded by Fr. Donald Nesti CSSp in 1994, the Nesti Center for Faith & Culture aims to bring a faithfully Catholic voice to the ongoing dialogue between faith and culture. Through this dialogue, the Center seeks to foster relationships, mutual understanding, and opportunities for collaboration with people of all backgrounds and beliefs. We strive to form people of faith who have fully integrated the human, spiritual, social and intellectual dimensions of their lives. This developmental process integrates theoretical and practical learning to help people communicate God’s unconditional love for the world and serve the common good.

Responsibilities:

Teaching courses primarily in the Nesti Center’s programs and, secondarily, as needed in other departments at the University of St. Thomas.
Developing and maintaining active research and publishing agenda on Catholicism, and potentially the wider Christian landscape, using the methods of social science.
Service activities as needed by the Nesti Center and the university.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in sociology
A track record of published research in the social scientific study of Christianity
Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level
Extensive knowledge of the Catholic intellectual tradition and the social and cultural context of Christianity in the United States
A commitment to the university’s mission and the vision of the Nesti Center
