Center Semillero for Hispanic/Latino Theology

The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is seeking applicants for a full-time Program Coordinator and Academic Advisor for the center Semillero for Hispanic/Latino Theology.

Center Semillero for Hispanic/Latino Theology is a center at the University of St Thomas that provides different levels of academic programs (associate, graduate and doctorate) in Catholic theology. All courses are 100% in Spanish and offered both online and in person format.

The Program Coordinator Academic Advisor for Center Semillero reports directly to the Director of the Center Semillero for Hispanic/Latino Theology.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordinate academic programs at Center Semillero:

Provides specialized support in the development, implementation, and marketing of programs/projects function, recruit and retain students.

Serves as a central point of contact between students, faculty, staff, other departments, and/or external constituencies on day-to-day programmatic, operational, and administrative matters; assists with students, faculty, meetings, special projects, and/or general problem resolution.

Coordinates activities of support staff, consultants, faculty, and/or volunteers engaged in implementation and administration of program objectives.

Writes, edits, and coordinates development of course catalogs, promotional materials, educational materials, training manuals, newsletters, and/or brochures, as appropriate to the program.

Maintains program/project records, researches information and gathers and computes various data; prepares special and/or one-time reports, summaries, or replies to inquiries, selecting relevant data from a variety of sources.

May assist with grant and/or proposal writing as appropriate to the objectives and funding nature of the program; may participate in other fundraising activities.

Performs miscellaneous administrative-related duties as assigned.



Academic advising for Center Semillero:

Function as a key academic advisor to students during the course of their studies and those inquiring about the Center’s programs.

Advises students about content and structure of academic programs at Center Semillero including graduation and/or transfer requirements for a particular program of study.

Audits, monitors, and evaluates individual student academic progress.

Assists students in the development of an educational plan including choosing a program of study and/or clarifying educational goals.

Informs students about alternatives, limitations and possible consequences of academic decisions (e.g. adding, dropping and withdrawing from courses; change of program, major and/or transfer institution)

Educates students about course planning and registration processes, refers to available on-and off-campus resources to meet individual needs including career and personal counseling.

Makes appropriate referrals to students perceived as at-risk, acts as an advocate as appropriate.

Participates in on and off campus events promoting Center Semillero of University of ST Thomas, assists with orientation meetings and programs.

Authorizes course withdrawals, adds, and drops as required.

Maintains administrative documents and confidential student records.

May represent the academic advising department on various internal and external committees.

Performs other advising-related duties as assigned.



Master of Arts in Theology, Pastoral Studies, Sacred Scriptures, and Family Life or related required.

Experience and Skill Requirements:

A minimum of 5 years of direct work experience coordinating active and high volume programs. Programs in the areas of theology, pastoral studies and related disciplines preferred.

A minimum of 2 years of experience advising students on curriculum decisions and course offerings preferably in a higher education environment.

Exceptional interpersonal communication skills and the ability to efficiently and effectively solve problems.

Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and People Soft.

Demonstrate ability to compose, correspond, edit and proofread documents.

Demonstrate dependability with proper work schedule and completing tasks.

Demonstrate attention to detail in projects and in every day assignments.

Demonstrate the ability to effectively multi-task and meet deadlines.

Ability to establish positive relationships with students, all levels of Faculty/Staff, Administration, Senior Administration, and the general public.

Must be self-motivated and function under minimal direct supervision with initiative to complete tasks

Travel on a local, regional or national level may be required occasionally to promote academic programs of Center Semillero.

Must be able to lift 30 lbs. in the form of materials and boxes when needed.

English and Spanish fluency in reading, writing and speaking is required.
