Senior Accountant

Controller’s Office

The University of St. Thomas (UST), a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is seeking applicants for a full-time Senior Accountant in the Controller’s Office. This position reports directly to the Accounting Manager.

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for preparing a wide variety of schedules and reconciliations along with associated journal entries. The Senior Accountant must demonstrate a strong level of attention to detail and organization. (S)he should be a self-starter, capable of working independently. The Senior Accountant works closely with other accounting team members to ensure the accuracy of accounting and financial records and to respond to inquiries and requests from departments throughout the University.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Reconcile and maintain assigned balance sheet accounts along with associated adjusting journal entries.
Prepare monthly standard journal entries.
Compile and generate assigned schedules for reporting and analysis.
Complete quarterly lead schedules for Balance Sheet and Income Statement Accounts.
Provide guidance to other business office employees with general ledger account coding.
Assist Controller with other special projects and other duties as assigned.
Prepare daily Cash flow projections and provide to Controller and VP.
Prepare Wire Transfers for release.
Complete Daily Cleared AP Checks reconciliation
Monthly Bank Reconciliations for Operating, A/P, Allegiance, Realty, Cigna, Gift Annuity, and 69 Bond Fund accounts.
Review Bank Exception Notifications and verify A/P payments and deter all fraudulent activity.
Cancel any A/P payment requests from Financial Aid Counselors and Accounts Payable Coordinator.
Upload weekly A/P Payments into Bank Positive Pay.
Assist Team members, including other departments, in researching fund activities and coding.
File monthly Journal Cash entries, along with other appropriate documentation for yearly auditing purposes.
Monthly Wire/Book Cash transfers between UST accounts, IA Transmittals, and BB&T.
Provide Financial Aid Counselors with Student Refund Reports from Nelnet.
Allocate Copy Paper, Parking Tokens, and AT&T to appropriate Departments.
Responsible for all Reclassification of GL journal entries request by UST community.
Reconcile all Accounts Receivable GL accounts Monthly.
Requirements:

Education: An accounting or business-related degree is preferred but not required.
Minimum of two years of accounting, finance, or business experience or an accounting or business degree without prior experience.
Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Strong teamwork mentality.
Personal qualities of integrity and credibility and an appreciation for the University’s mission.
Keen problem-solving skills which enable their ability to work independently.
Proficient level of knowledge in Microsoft Excel and Word.
Experience working with PeopleSoft accounting applications is preferred.
